1. Where is the Markhor found?
Answer: Markhors are found in wooded mountains in Northern Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. In India, these are found in the Pir Panjal Range.
2. What does Markhor mean?
Answer: The name Markhor is derived from the Persian word Mar - a snake, and Khor - eating. These goats got this name as their horns are somewhat reminiscent of a snake's winding body.
3. What are the dangers that the Markhor faces?
Answer: The dangers Markhor faces are human warfare, hunting pressure, and increasing disturbance and competition from domestic goats and sheep. Moreover Markhor faces the risk of extinction.
4. Why does the Markhor climb cliffs?
Answer: The Markhors climb cliffs to enjoy the warmith of the morning sun.
5. What is the status of the Markhor?
Answer: The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources has classified the Markhors as an endangered species, meaning it is in danger of facing extinction in the near future. There are around 2000 to 4000 Markhors existing in the wild.
